Preparing for Your Surgery

Important things to remember:

  • Do NOT eat or drink after midnight the night before your surgery.
This includes water, food, coffee, any liquids, chewing tobacco, and candy such as breath mints, etc. This is for your own safety, and is essential since your surgery may be canceled if you eat or drink after midnight.
  • You may brush your teeth and rinse your mouth, but do not swallow any water.
These same restrictions apply to children. Children under 10 years of age should not even brush their teeth on the day of surgery.
  • You can prepare for surgery by not smoking.
Smoking produces mucous and increases the chance of complications. Patients who have asthma, emphysema or bronchitis should avoid cigarettes completely for at least 48 hours before surgery. The Ambulatory Surgery Center is a smoke-free environment.
  • To ensure your safety, you MUST arrange for someone to take you home and stay with you.
  • You should take your usual morning blood pressure and heart medicines with a sip of water.
We encourage you to list your medications and any questions you may have, so that you will have them available at the time of your telephone interview with the pre-admissions nurse.
  • If you wear contact lenses, please bring a container for the lenses or wear your glasses on the day of your procedure.
  • Please leave valuables such as jewelry, wallet or purse at home.
All jewelry, including wedding rings and any body piercing, must be removed prior to surgery to ensure your safety.
  • If you develop a cold, persistent cough, fever or other health problem, or if you need to cancel your surgery, please notify your physician.

Registration Information

Please complete the Pre-Admission form as soon as possible and mail to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital in the self-addressed stamped envelope provided. It is very important to have any pre-operative lab or other tests ordered by your surgeon completed at least one week prior to surgery.

Our lab is located within the Admissions Department at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, 1165 Montgomery Drive. The lab is open 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Saturday. If you use an outside lab, have them fax results to 707-547-4648.

Before your procedure we will need a copy of your insurance cards. We accept co-pay and deductible payments by Visa and MasterCard, check, and cash. Or, payment arrangements may be made in advance with Patient Financial Services, 707-525-5228.

After we have received your registration information, you will be contacted to set a time for a telephone interview with a pre-operative nurse. The appointment will be three to seven days prior to your surgery. We’re looking forward to making your outpatient surgery experience as comfortable as possible.
