Warning Signs of Serious Psychiatric Disorders

Emotional Changes

  • Unstable feelings and emotions
  • Loss of interest in normal activities and hobbies
  • Statements about feeling helpless, hopeless, useless or about “giving up”
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Extreme mood swings
  • Excessively happy, talkative or energetic with impaired judgment about consequences of actions
  • Extreme or long-lasting grief (after loss of spouse, child, friend, home, etc.) with impaired functioning
  • Frequent, unexplained crying
  • Unprovoked anger, hostility or threatening behavior

Physical Changes

  • Unexplained change in appetite or weight
  • Severe and persistent changes in sleep/wake patterns
  • Medically unexplained and significant change in ability to speak, hear, see or move

Changes in Ability to Think and Reason

  • Unexplained loss of concentration or ability to reason clearly
  • Seeing or hearing things that do not exist
  • Unexplained disorientation or confusion
  • Significantly increased forgetfulness
